Certified Sub Zero Appliance Repair in Lomita: Reliable Repairs
According to radiocarbon dates on artifacts recovered in the Channel Islands, the first known inhabitants of Southern California lived before 9000BC. The Gabrielino Indians lived in Susanna, or "Place of the Rushes," at what is now 230th Street and Utility Way in Carson and were the earliest known residents of Lomita and its surrounds. This hamlet was still present in the 1850s.
Although it is evident that Lomita is named after the Spanish word for "small hills," there appears to be some confusion about who donated it to the town. According to legend, after inspecting the region from a hilltop in Rancho Palos Verdes, the location was given the name Lomita. Another theory proposes that "Lomita del Toro," or "small hills of the bull," occurs on an early surveyor's map of Rancho San Pedro, just a few miles east of the current city, hinting that Lomita was named after the area wildlife.
In 1542–1543, the Viceroy of New Spain commissioned Juan Rodrguez Cabrillo to explore the Pacific Ocean, proving that the Spanish Empire had reached this part of the world. In 1767, the land was taken over by the California province.
In 1784, the Spanish Crown awarded Juan José Dominguez Rancho San Pedro a 75,000-acre estate. The rancho increased in size when Dominguez's forefathers split the land among family members, sold pieces to freshly arrived immigrants, or abandoned parts while proving their legal claim with the Mexican government in 1828 and the United States government 1858.
